Yacht Sales In February Shows Promising Sales Numbers

30 03
What a difference a year makes. Although February brought harsh weather across much of the United States the same as it did in 2014, the beginning of the luxury boat industry’s spring selling season saw a complete reversal of fortunes. Powerboat sales rose 5.5 percent to 4,261 units sold in main segments and 3.8 percent industry-wide for a total of 5,928 in the 27 states that represent almost two-thirds of the American market. Winter boat shows also reported high attendance along with sizable numbers of visitors who were serious boat buyers. Improved sales numbers as a result of these shows are beginning to become evident. One of the strongest categories in the main segment was aluminum fishing boats. Early sale indicated that this segment rose 9.8 percent to 1,320. Fishing boats sell well in spring as anglers want to enjoy their hobby immediately. Sales of aluminum pontoon boats rose 6.3 percent to 628, while 11- to40-foot outboard fiberglass boats also enjoyed an 8.6 percent gain ...

Megayachts and Superyachts Unwelcome in France? Catastrophique !

26 03
You'd think so in the way the French goverment is acting toward yachting with some proposed yachting taxation. The European Committee for Professional Yachting (ECPY) has petitioned the French government over what the association calls a “catastrophic” legislative proposal.

In January, the French Senate presented a bill to tax yachts cruising in 322 managed marine areas in France. The country’s However, National Assembly, initially rejected the bill, recognizing the potential impact it would have on the yachting industry. The areas affected constituted an equivalent of almost 24 percent of France’s territorial waters. The French government, however, has revised and resubmitted the bill, with the Chamber of Deputies passing in on its first reading. The bill will now be presented to the French Senate for discussion and amendment before returning to the chamber for its final reading. The ECPY has noted that it intends to renew efforts to block anchorage tax provisions from being passed by ...

MegaYacht Charters Affected In Turkish Waters Due to Middle East Unrest

25 03
If the 2014 summer charter season is an indication, Turkey as a destination for superyacht charters is suffering because of media coverage of regional unrest in the Middle East. Cem Boz, managing director of Contact Turkey Yachting, has indicated that 2014 was quiet in Turkish waters because the political situation in Iraq and Syria has discouraged clients from chartering. While cancellations have not occurred, clients appear not to be booking for 2015 at all because they don’t understand that the regional wars are far away from Turkish waters. The lack of interest in Turkey is particular prevalent among American charter clients who tend to book far in advance. Boz still expects to receive last-minute bookings from the majority of European clients. Pruva Yachting, a boutique charter company in Turkey is also seeing a declining charter trend in Turkey as some clients and charter brokers believe that Turkey is dangers. As a result, some clients are opting to charter boats in Greece and ...

Megayacht Builder Christensen. More Lawsuits Filed Against Troubled Christensen Shipyards

24 03
The financially troubled Christensen Shipyards, based in Vancouver, WA, now faces a total of five lawsuits, apparently spelling the end of the manufacturer of luxury yachts in its current format. The latest to file against the yard is Henry Luken, the Tennessee businessman who has 50% interest in the yard. Earlier in March, Luken and Christensen Financing LLC, apparently a current or former Luken affiliate, filed a suit asking a Clark Country Superior Court judge to appoint a receive to assume control of Christensen Shipyards and to manage its assets. The suit indicates that a receiver would ensure that partially completed bots, including two purchases in different deals by Luken and Christensen Financing, would be completed. The receiver would also have the power to sell and to negotiate with Christensen customers. In the suit, Luken and Christensen Financing say the shipyard is currently insolvent, not paying tis debts as they become due or is in imminent danger of insolvency. ...

23 03
De Blanco Naval Architecture and Yacht Design has revealed their latest superyacht concept, a 46.64m sloop that features class hull lines with a power rig and sail. J Class yachts of the America’s Cup provided inspiration for the Spanish designers as they indicated that wanted to pay tribute to these renowned sailboats. Interiors are filled with natural light thanks from a nearly continuous windscreen formed around the superstructure. The hull sides have plenty of openings for each compartment on board, while on the deck are myriad hatches and openings that give the vessel a more modern look. Four double aft cabins, two on each side of the main deck, accommodate guests. Crew quarters encompass six double cabins. The cockpit is an outstanding enclosed area with ergonomic seats on each side for sunbathing lounging and alfresco dining. A ...

SuperYachts Cheaper in The EU? Exchange Rates Are at 12 Year Low!

17 03
When something sinks in the yachting industry, it usually signals bad news. Not so with the recent free fall in the value of the Euro. Last week, the Euro slumped to a 12-year low against the U.S. dollar, closing at $1.0578 USD. The Euro is now approximately back at the value it was in January 2003, a year after most European countries adopted it as their mode of currency. While this change of fortune makes American goods more expensive for Europeans, the opposite holds true for Americans. What does this change of fortune mean for the luxury yacht market? The boat of your dreams has suddenly become much more affordable. “Now is the time to buy a yacht from a prominent European manufacturer or one that’s on the secondary market while inventory is still high,” said 4Yacht’s Craig Timm. “Yachts from the biggest and best shipyards in the Netherlands, Germany and Italy will be much less expensive than they were even a few months ago thanks to the favorable exchange rate.” Over the past ...
