As undoubtedly the most important industry event, the 2014 Monaco Yacht Show is eagerly awaited for virtually the entire year by owners and industry experts, and then flew past in a mere four days. Thanks to the wealth of positive news coming from shipyards and industry officials at this year’s show, those attending the sensational event at Port Hercules left with a sense of optimism.
A number of industry executives took advantage of the show’s Breaking News Center to announce new designs or initiation of construction on innovative lines. Amels, for example, indicated that all five of the company’s limited edition designs have begun construction. The shipyard has run at full capacity during the past year, recently delivering three new builds and three retrofits. Other leading shipyards, including Lürssen, Oceanco and Feadship also indicated that they have a full slate of orders for 2015, a situation that is expected to have other shipyards expanding to meet demand.
In speaking about the signing of agreements to take on two 100-meter-plus superyachts, Benetti CCO Fabio Ermetto indicated that although the company is not able to talk about the ships, both have different lengths and are completed different from each other. The company is in the midst of designing both yachts and will need to make changes to its facility to accommodate three boats under construction.
Among the innovative projects under construction is the 141m Dream Symphony, slated to become the world’s largest sailing yacht. Ken Freivokh, responsible for the yacht’s interior design, noted that the wood going into the construction must be connected in a very different and time-consuming manner. His firm is working on designing yachts in a range of sizes with the biggest model at 150 meters including a full IMAX cinema.
As is always the case the 2014 MYS was the pinnacle for networking and client liaison. Along with updates from manufacturers across the yachting industry, the positivity from the industry’s largest and most influential builders and designers exhibited at this year’s show indicates the stability of worldwide yachting markets.
