Third quarter American brokerage sales continued to follow a trend established during the first half of 2014 and repeated the third quarter surge from 2013. Aggregate prices paid for luxury boats purchased were incrementally higher for the first nine months of 2014, with average prices rising by seven percent for powerboats and six percent for sailboats. The only exception towards stronger pricing was the 80-foot-plus superyacht market.
Sales volume remained lower as downward trends for smaller boats continued to increase. Average prices for boats under 26 feet continued to increase, however, with median sales prices for the nine-month period increasing five percent from $22,000 to $23,000. Boats in the 26 to 35-foot category experienced similar results with the average price increasing from $54,000 to $57,000. Sales volume was stronger for boats 36 to 45 feet, only down one percent for the year. Total price paid increased and is 2 two percent ahead for the year, with an average sale rising from $129,000 to $133,000.
Sales for all yachts larger than 46 fee were ahead four percent for the, with total price paid rising six percent. Average sale price increased to $662,000. For boats in the 46- to 55-foot range, the third quarter saw a 10 percent growth in volume during the third quarter, and were up six percent for 2014 with 1,360 boats sold. Average sales prices appeared to be heading upward if September sales figures continue. Superyacht sales volume continue to be strong, with 41 boats sold in the third quarter and a total of 146 changing hands in 2014, an increase of three percent over 2013.
