Rivergate Marina and Shipyard in Queensland, Australia has announced an expansion of its facilities in an effort to increase its offerings to the global superyacht market. Formerly able to accommodate yachts up to 80 meters, Rivergate now has the ability to offer berths for vessels up to 234 meters. The new berthing is available through a cooperative effort with Queensland Bulk Terminal’s “sugar wharf.”
Although demand for larger berths is not yet in high demand, Rivergate’s manager Andrew Cannon expects demand to increase as previously no good options in Australia for superyachts larger than 80 meters existed other than at commercial wharves alongside container ships where yachts were subject to the same excessive berthing fees, security, lighting, handlers and other requirements imposed upon commercial ships. In addition to providing private berthing without the commercial hassles, the new berths will allow Rivergate to easily access yachts to carry out in-water maintenance.
Cannon is optimistic about Rivergate’s future once the word gets out about the larger sizing as the new berthing facilities are unique to the region and could have a significant impact on the passage planning of superyachts. Rivergate is on a central location on Australia’s eastern seaboard, south of the cyclone belt, allowing vessels within the Asia Pacific area to have easy access to services. Cannon added that the company as carried out refits on seven superyachts over the last year
