The second largest sailing vessel ever built by Italian shipyard Perini Navi is well underway. The 70m ketch named Sybaris features design by the Perini Navi technical and design office with Phillipe Briand responsible for naval architecture consultation. The American company PH Design is responsible for her interiors.
Her large main deck with its 30-meter long guest area running from the aft cockpit to the wheelhouse is one of Sybaris’ most outstanding features. This area also contains a sliding door that is four meters wide, ensuring easy communication from the cockpit to the main saloon, which is free of structural pillars to provide unobstructed panoramic views.
Just as spectacular is the 18-meter long flybridge that provides a stunning outdoor area for relaxation, entertainment or sunbathing. The interior has custom furniture that epitomizes luxury by using titanium for structural features and design accents.
Sybaris’ hull and superstructure are constructed in aluminum. Her rig in carbon fiber includes two Rondal masts, one 72 meters, the other 62 meters high, with a total sail plan in excess of 2,000 square meters. She has three tenders, two 7-meter Cockwells and a 4.5=meter rescue tender, all of which are recessed below deck.
The ketch’s three variable speed generators that supply electrical power via a direct current bus to the vessel’s main electrical grid is another unique aspect. This feature allows the storage of excess power in Class-Approved lithium polymer batteries, making it a first for a Perini Navi sailing yacht. Advantages of this types of system include elimination of energy waste, lower fuel consumption, lower maintenance, reduced weight and easier delivery of clean electrical power.
Sybaris is due for completion in 2015.
