Two students at the Politecnico di Milano studying Yacht and Cruise Vessel Design who are entered in the Young Designer of the Year contest have released their 55m ketch concept design. Named Helios, the performance flybridge vessel, designed by Marco Ferrari and Alberto Franchi, has an emphasis on eco-friendly functions for cruising and occasional racing.
The ketch has ample living space, accommodating up to 10 guests over four luxurious cabins and an owner’s suite. The latter features a private beach club and retractable swimming platform. Staff cabins can accommodate eight crew. Pubic area features include a protected cockpit with dining area and a deck free of riggings that results in a larger space for entertainment, relaxation and sunbathing and an infinity pool on the flybridge that may be transformed into a sunbathing area with plush cushions.
Two tender garages are located on the main deck with room for a 5m tender, two jet skis, two canoes and a variety of other water toys. A third tender garage is on the lower deck and is designed to house a 7m replica imousine tender.
Helios’ main characteristic is her sails that are made of flexible silicon solar cells. The surface of the solar cells at 2,052square meters can generate power of approximately 355 kWh that may be accumulated in storage batters in the engine room. The spinnaker is made of nylon with the mizzen staysail made of Dacron to remain light, handy and functional.
