Megayacht Oyster 118' Construction Begins. Construction of the Oyster 118, the largest yacht ever built under the Oyster brand, has begun, with tooling to begin in April. In partnership with Humphreys Yacht Design, the shipyard is constructing additional facilities to enable the build of the second Oyster 118 simultaneously with the first. The additional facility means that the brand will have the potential to produce four 118s by summer 2020.
The new design, with approximately 700 cubic meters of interior space, will have the ability to accommodate up to 12 guests and a crew of six. The first build, with an anticipated launching in December 2017, will feature a five cabin/four head plan in the aft lower deck and an emphasis on cockpit dining with a huge social area that has potential for observation seating. Options on the forward lower deck include a sixth suite or a television room that can convert to a children’s bunk room. Arrangements above and below provide ample opportunity for personalization and include an alternative square stem profile that adds one meter to deck length.
Innovative features of the Oyster 118, built to DNV classification and MCA LY3 coding, include the id-boom, single-point mainsteet penetrating the bimini top to run down through the glazed and carbon reinforced saloon entry bulkhead to the captive winch deep in the boat. Other complex design work features a gullwing escape hatch from the engine room to deck opening out of the superstructure’s glazed sides.
Sail plan include a single headstay, removable inner forestay for jib and asymmetrics tacking to the anchor strut prodder. As many as four captive winches, tending mainsail halyard and main and headsail sheets, are available for easy handling. The rig is four-spreader carbon with roller boom. A nine-person Dieseljet RIB launches from its foredeck pit by lift-pole homed on the mast, with the pit doubling as a cushioned relaxation area.
