Just as much of the world is obsessed with size, superyachts continue to grow in size and quality each year. The new generation of owners continually builders to push the envelop with the latest technologies on the market. Although motor yachts represent the world’s largest private yachts, sailing yachts can often reach an impressive overall length and have the latest in advanced technology, architecture, design, styling and performance.
Several mega sailing yachts are currently under build that will change the face of sailing. The largest of these is the 147m White Pearl, currently under construction at Nobiskurg in Germany, part of AbuDhabi Mar Group, Her beam is reportedly 24.38 meters with a draft of 8 meters. Construction started in March 2012, with delivery schedule for sometime this year.
Dream Symphony, constructed by Dream ship Victory in Turkey is at 147 meters the largest sailing yacht ever built in collaboration with Dykstra & Partners for naval architecture and Ken Freivokh Design for exterior and interior design. The design team is the same one that crafted the charter yacht Maltese Falcon.
Solar, by Oceanco is the third largest launch in build at 106 meters in length. Designed by the acclaimed studio Nuvolari Lenard with naval architecture by Dykstra Naval Architects. Set for launch in 2015, she will have a steel hull and a beam of 15 meters. As the name suggests, Solar will be powered primarily by solar energy.
Vitters’ 85m Hull 3069, also known as Project 85, will have exterior design by Bill Tripp, with inter design by Doelker + Voges. She is expected to accommodate 12 guests in luxurious quarters and have crew cabins for 18. The interior reportedly will feature light wood and stainless steel details balanced with colorful upholstery.
Perini Navi’s Sybaris is another highly-awaited sailing yacht. Design is by the builder’s in-house team in partnership with bespoke Phillippe Briand. PH Design will give Sybaris stylish and elegant interiors that will include a massive 30-meter guest area on the main deck, connected to the cockpit by a 4-meter wide sliding door. She will also feature an 18-meter fly bridge and offer additional outdoor and entertainment areas for guests.
The past year also saw a number of important sailing yachts launched and delivered. The largest was the traditional Phinisi Lamima at 65 meters. This stunning Indonesian wooden ketch has accommodations for up to 14 guests in seven traditional and luxurious cabins. Lamima combines traditional Indonesia building techniques with modern design, technology and supreme safety. Lamima was designed by Marcello Pena.
Launched in 2014 and only recently delivered Perini Navi’s Perseus^3 represents the first sloop in the manufacturer’s new 60-meter series. Perseus^3 was designed by the shipyard’s in-house naval architects in collaboration with Ron Holland.
Alloy Yachts of New Zealand delivered the 56.4 meter Mondango 3 in early2014, with exterior design by Dubois Naval Architects. Reymond Langton Design crafted the interior, which features accommodations for 11 guests in five cabins. Notable features include an aft deck spa pool, two large tenders stowed under the foredeck and a swing lift center board that allows her to slide into shallow lagoons and waterways.
