Yacht Builder Cantieri di Pisa Reviving Classic Kitalpha Yacht Design

yacht-builder-cantieriYacht Builder Cantieri di Pisa Reviving Classic Kitalpha Yacht Design: Italian shipyard Cantieri di Pisa has announced it is updating a classic yacht design named the Kitalpha that was popular during the 1950s and 1960s. As the Kitalpha 22, the new design is targeted at owners who love classing looks and styling ad like to occasionally take the helm themselves.

Canitieri di Pisa’s announcement follows on the heels of its decision to bring back the Akhir series, another older-era model. Luca Dini Design will breathe new life into the Kitalpha. Although not quite a megayacht at 22 meters, the Kitalpha 22 still has many of the characteristics of a yacht of such size. One of two available layouts allows the transom to act as a beach club, spa or gym. Glass sliding glass doors allow climate control for year-round use. The other available configuration allows for tender stowage aft on the main deck.

Dini Design pays homage to the original Kitalpha by including wood on the superstructure, with the traditional theme carrying on in the interior. Owners will still be able to select their own décor if they do not want the era-authentic suggested interior. The design is class from the below-decks staterooms to the main deck saloon. The country kitchen is expected to appeal to American buyers while a galley below decks may appeal more to Europeans and place a TV/cinema room on the main deck instead.

In addition to two layout options, buyers also have a choice of two different construction materials packages and related hull shapes. Cantieri di Pisa will offering aluminum or steel for semi-displacement or full-displacement hulls, respectively Performance will differ too, with the aluminum version seeing an expected top speed of 19 knots and a 2,000nm range at 10 knots when powered by MAN diesels. The steel version should have a top speed of 14 knots and a 1,500nm range at 10 knots under Volvo Penta power.  Both hull designs with have a 6.5m beam.

Why is Cantieri di Pisa reviving Kitalpha? Roberto Zambrini, CEO of Mondomarine, which owns the shipbuilder indicated that several owners with vessels ranging from 40 to 50 meters have begun to ask for smaller yachts. These owners want to be independent, yet enjoy the same quality of life that they have on the larger yachts. Cantieri di Pisa will only begin construction of a hull under contract and will not perform any spec work on this model.
