Yachting Deal? New Law Allows 180 Days of Tax-Free Cruising in Washington State
The Marine Tourism Bill, passed by the Washington State legislature in a special session last July and enacted on September 1, 2015, allows yachts registered as an LLC to stay in the state’s water for up to 180 days text-free. When the 180 days have passed, Washington State will imposed a 10 percent tax on the value of the yacht.
This legislation is expected to have a positive effect for superyacht owners and charters who want to visit Washington and its notable San Juan Islands where tourism incudes whale watching, kayaking, fishing, hiking, fine dining, shopping and more.
The San Juan Island provide stunning vistas, short port-to-port passages, intriguing channels and a wide selection of onshore entertainment. Available facilities include marinas, resorts, craft markets, museums, art galleries and waterfront restaurants. Orcas Island, San Juan Island and Lopez Island are the main destinations, but there are other charming islands worth a visit. A nearby 113-acre state marine park is a great place to explore when cruising.
