Megayacht Camarina Royale Sinks Off Cuba After Fire: The first few weeks of 2016 seems to be the year that superyachts are doomed to meet watery graves with the latest vessel, the 34.95, Camarina Royale, built by Benetti, meeting her doom in the waters off Cuba on the last day of January. The incident occurred when that yacht was traveling from Fort Lauderdale to the Virgin Islands with a crew of six onboard, according to Captain Jason Halvorsen.
The captain noted that a fire broke out in the engine room due to an undetermined mechanical failure. The crew attempted to douse the flames using all available means, but eventually the fire engulfed the yacht.
Clipper Venus, a Norwegian LPG tanker, was the first vessel to respond to Camarina Royale’s request for assistance, followed by the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Confidence. The Norwegian ship transported the crew to a nearby port in addition to offering initial assistance. All crew and passengers were transported to safety.
Camarina Royale, launched by Benetti in 2001, and formerly operating under the names Nanou and Grand Coroto, is not the first superyacht to succumb to fire in 2016. The One and Barbie sustain serious damage at a marina in Turkey in early January, while Princess 95 Queen Anna also caught fire at another Turkish location later in the month.
Camaraina Royale featured exteriors from Stefano Righini Design while Zuretti Interior Design collaborated with Argonautica Yacht Interiors on the interior that accommodates a total of 10 guests.
