Explorer Megayacht Point Break Made for Cruising and Surfing

megayacht-Point-Break-concept2Explorer Megayacht Point Break Made for Cruising and Surfing: Surfing and exploring the Northwest Passage are about to become related. That’s because two Australian brothers who are also avid surfers have commissioned Vripack to design a rugged explorer to traverse the dangerous waterway north of the Arctic Circle. It’s part of the brothers’ lifelong plan to surf in places where it has never been done previously. Thus explains the yacht’s name, Point Break.

Point Break is meant to cross the Northwest Passage from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean via route 7, between Banks Island and Victoria Island. Even though it is called route 7, it was the first one to be discovered in the 1850s, proving that such a route existed. The routes are numbered according to their popularity.

The two owner brothers of Point Break specifically approached Vripack’s Pim Dijksman to design the explorer vessel. Dijksman has previously contributed to the five Vripack design megayachts that have crossed the Northwest Passage to date. Four other megayachts designed by other houses have also done so.

Examining the actual route that the brothers want to take in the journey allowed Dijksman to come up with the vessel’s operational profile. Point Break will need to cruise at low speeds due to ice, preferably without noise but will also need good performance to arrive at locations where the surf is up. Vripack decided that a hybrid propulsion package would suit diverse needs that include slipping out of port at night as well as travelling at 20 knots.

The brothers also want Point Break to create waves so they can surf behind the boat. A water-ballast wing tank aft aboard the vessel will help accomplish this. When there is no wind, the captain can place her in full-speed diesel-electric mode and fill up the tank, causing Point Break’s stern to dig into the water to create waves.

Few other details are available, although the brothers intend to cruise with their canine companions. Point Break will also carry a variety of surfboards and kiteboards, along with snowboards and skateboards for land excursions, making her a family-focused vessel for fun and relaxation.
