FLIBS Site Receives Tentative Approval for Renovations: The site of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) has received a tentative go-ahead from Fort Lauderdale city commissioners for seriously needed improvements. The proposed renovations slated for the Bahia Mar resort and marina include permanent structures that will double as exhibit space.
Plans call for a marina village with shows, two waterfront restaurants, a promenade, two 29-story condo towers and a two-tier parking garage that will become exhibit space during FLIBS. Commissioners tentatively approved the project 4-1 with the final vote set to take place in June. Officials from Show Management, which produces FLIBS noted that because of the high overhead clearance of the parking garage, the area will look like museum or art space when the company transforms it for the show.
Discussions to renovate the Bahia Mar resort and marine have gone on for years. The last leaseholder of the site, which includes 23 acres of dockage, received approval from the commission in 2011 to start renovations, but that company, LXR Resorts, did not come to terms with the City of Fort Lauderdale on a lease renewal. TRR Bahia Mar bought the lease rights in 2014.
TRR Bahia Mar still needs to negotiate a new lease of its own with the city as the current one expires in four years. The company wants a 50-year term, with provisions for a 50-year renewal. Fort Lauderdale city officials, however, won’t consider renewing unless TRR Bahia Mar secures a 30-year commitment from FLIBS within those same four years.
