Yacht Show Starts Off The Season At Cannes Yachting Festival: As the yachting season kicks off with the Cannes Yachting Festival, running today through Sunday, September 11, those attending the event can expect to see tighter security, both at the festival and in the city of Cannes itself.
With the number of recent terrorist attacks in France, heavily armed police continually patrol the Riviera. Tourists in Cannes are no longer allowed to carry large bags onto the beach as a precaution. Don’t be surprised to see army personnel patrolling in small jeeps or walking and wearing bullet-proof vests and carrying large weapons.
Extra security will also be in place at the Cannes Yachting Festival to protect the thousands of attendees who pass through, as well as exhibitors, yacht owners, their vessels and crew. The 2016 edition of the show will feature more than 600 yachts ranging in size from two to 50 meters on either side of Cannes’ La Croisette promenade. At least 156 new models will be introduced, with 87 of those expected to be world premieres. For the 10th consecutive year, Port Pierre Canto will be the show’s brokerage and charter area, featuring previously owned yachts ranging from 22 to 44 meters long.
Although Cannes originally started as primarily a European showcase, it has continued to evolve into one of the world’s most important boat shows as it attracts builders of superyachts from around the world. More than 50% of exhibitors, however, represent marine services and product manufacturers.
New this year are special areas that focus on sail and power catamarans and RIBs. A much larger space, called La Terrasse that overlooks the old port on one side and Cannes Bay and Croisett on the other, is reserved exclusively for luxury stakeholders in the goods, superyacht and automobile sectors. Ideally situated near the departure area for VIP shuttles, LaTerrasse will showcase luxury brands in watches and jewelry, furniture and design, art and photography, wine and spirits, gastronomy, art and photography, high-tech and more. Visitors will also be able to enjoy a 20-minute practice golf sessions during which they can hit biodegradable balls from La Terrasse into the sea.
Another first is the presence of Studio Harcourt at the festival. Visitors can enjoy a photo shoot and make-up sessions under the lights with this legendary studio. The studio will take a maximum of 40 portraits. Reservations are required. Several portrait exhibitions will be on display and include Edith Piaf, Halle Berry, Ewan McGregor, Cate Blanchett, Jean Gabin, Salvador Dali, Novack Djokovic and more.
The Cannes Yachting Festival will open every day starting at 10 a.m. Closing time is 7 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Late opening until 10 p.m. on Friday and early closing at 6 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are €18 each, with children 12 and under admitted for free.
