Megayacht By Icon Islander Set to Break the Mold: Icon Yachts is out to prove that long-range cruising and super-size comfort can readily come in a smaller package. The Icon Islander at only 29.2m (96 feet) is a departure for the shipbuilder, which is constructing the vessel on spec.
Islander expects a 2,200 nm range at 10 knots. Although other steel-hulled yachts of this size can achieve such numbers, most are expedition-style builds. Fiberglass vessels of the same size are generally engineered for speed and short visits to islands. She will also employ a hybrid Scania propulsion system for extra efficiency.
The build will be geared to yacht owners who have decided to step down to smaller boats to simplify matters such as having smaller crews as Islander can be managed by a crew of four for daily operations. Buyers not yet ready to jump onto larger yachts are also a target market.
Ken Freivokh’s design will incorporate a main deck master suite and a choice of two or three guest staterooms and nearly floor-to-ceiling glass encasing the main saloon. A tender garage is included. The eventual owner can also request personalized arrangements on the 7.5m beam yacht. Icon also claims that the hardtop fly bridge is also the biggest in this size range, although the manufacturer has not provided measurements to date.
Islander will take 18 months to build at an estimated $11.8 million.
