Giga Yachts! Size DOES Matter!

How many times have we heard that size does matter? Well when we are talking Giga Yachts it certainly seems so. Currently the phrase 4Yacht, Inc. coined, "Giga Yacht" seems to apply in the world of yachting, Giga Yacht Style.

We asked Craig Timm, the President of 4Yacht, Inc., how it came up with the phrase "giga yacht" . "In 2004 we were in a meeting in London at the Manderin Oriental Hotel in Knightsbridge with Frank Mulder of Mulder Design, and Charlotte Stephenson of the Yacht Report. We were discussing building a large yacht over 400' based on one of Frank's designs. During our discussion we talked about the current trend toward larger yachts and I was asked by Charlotte how I would describe the yacht to the potential client. As I was phrasing my answer in my mind I was thinking about the current names allocated to boats by size. The term mega yacht or super yacht just didn't seem to apply to a yacht of this size". said Craig Timm.

"I responded to Charlotte that I would say to the clients its a "Giga Yacht". We all kind of chuckled at that point and didn't think much further about it. Kind of stuck from that point forward. During the the next few years we ran ads with the "Giga Yacht" term."

Craig goes further on to say. " The other thing you have to consider when comparing yachts is how they exponentially expand in volume compared to size. Keep it simple, take an 80 meter yacht and compare it next to a 100 meter giga yacht. While the size in length difference is 20 meters, or 20%, the volume of the 100 meter giga yacht is THREE TIMES that of the 80 meter yacht. Quite a difference in interior volume. When you overlay the 80 meter in scale to the 100 meter giga yacht it is readily apparant. The only thing limiting yacht size is the buyers desire and their budget. We currently have 4-5 giga yachts for sale in the design stage the client can chose from ranging from a 100 meter giga yacht up to a 200 meter giga yacht in length. With a Giga Yacht, the sky's the limit".

The current Giga Yachts in the world is still pretty rare, but is growing. The recent launch of  the giga yacht Eclipse is just one example at a reported 557'. Which giga yacht did it "eclipse"? Dubai, the 525' giga yacht, owned by Sheikh Mohammed, ruler of Dubai.
