Amsterdam A New Destination for Superyachts: The HISWA Holland Yachting Group has announced its intention to make the Netherlands, and Amsterdam in particular, a major destination for superyachts. The group indicates that a quiet transformation in yachting destinations has occurred over the past few years, with more owners and charter clients opting to cruise in areas other than the traditional destinations in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.
A huge surge in popularity in northern Europe is one reason behind the move. Jeroen Sirag, HISWA export director, noted that Amsterdam is an idea destination for superyachts due to its unique DNA. The city has become a center for superyacht construction, refit and maintenance. The country’s history makes Dutch shipyards and suppliers understand that adapting to different markets while making no concessions to outstanding quality and constant service excellence is necessary.
Amsterdam has a number of important attributes that make it an ideal superyacht destination. It has secure docking options right in the city center that include the National Maritime Museum and the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam. Its city center is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. This vibrant city also has a number of world-class museums, luxury shopping, culinary restaurants and famous festivals.
It’s also particularly well suited as a superyacht hub in terms of physical and institutional arrangements. Schiphol International Airport, Europe’s third largest, is 20 minutes away. The long maritime history of the Netherlands and the Dutch affinity for water means that rules and facilities are finely tuned to the needs to superyacht owners.
Amsterdam’s location in northern Europe make it the perfect starting point for more adventurous owners to explore northern Europe’s higher latitudes as vessels can easily cruise to the United Kingdom and Ireland, Scandinavia, St. Petersburg and beyond. The fjords of Norway have proved to be particularly popular amongst superyacht clientele in recent years.
Within 200km of Amsterdam, the Netherlands is home to a proliferation of quality superyacht shipyards and suppliers that are more than capable of fielding the most challenging superyacht requests. Feadship is building a new shipyard to construct superyachts of up to 160 meters LOA in Amsterdam, while HISWA has also indicated that several yards and suppliers have expressed interest in opening facilities in Amsterdam.
Officials from HISWA and the Port of Amsterdam will attend the Monaco Yacht show this September to promote Amsterdam as a superyacht destination.
