Arkup Hopes to Merge Yachts and Residences into One Concept: Superyachts are homes upon the water for many yacht owners who spend much of the time traveling the seasons or remaining quayside in a favorite marine. Miami-based Arkup Liveable Yachts has taken this idea one step further through the creation of an at-sea living solution that is a completely stable, full self-sufficient home on the water.
The initial idea came from the concept that Miami didn’t have an nice locations for restaurant with good food, good service and a great view. Arkup started with a proposal to build a fully-stabilized restaurant, however, during preliminary analysis, it became apparent that building a recreational living solution that could offer a range of benefits that could not be realized in a conventional residential setting.
Arkup cofounder Nicholas Derouin indicated that the goal ended up creating the best of both worlds in terms of residential and yachting solutions. Because it is a movable structure, the solution adds mobility and more freedom to conventional living, making it flexible and dynamic. It will not provide the same speed and range as a yacht, but will provide a comfortable environment with more living space.
To compete with conventional residences, the Arkup project has a stabilized platform that uses extendable anchored hydraulic spuds that raise the structure several meters out of the water to protect it from harsh weather, storm surges and even hurricanes. The structure is designed to withstand wine speeds up to 135 knots. The spuds can be completely retracted into the structure to allow for comfortable cruising and entry into shallower waters.
Arkup’s creations have been designed according to the ABYC and U.S. Coat Guard’s recreational standards. They simply require a standard U.S. driving license and yacht insurance to operate.
The first one is under construction in Miami and is slated for completion this June. Construction takes approximately eight to 10 months, depending on the level of customization, from the time the buyer signs to delivery. Starting price is just over $2 million and goes up to $3.5 million with full spec and integrated self-sustaining options.
