August Yacht Sales Show Mixed Results: For the third consecutive month, brokerages reported incremental increases in yacht sales with figures up 1 percent from August 2015 at 2,902 boats sold. Sailboats led the way with a 3 percent volume increase as 527 boats exchanged hands. During July and August 2016, sailboat sales increase 4 percent, although they were lower by 3 percent for the entire year as 3,696 were sold.
Aggregate price for boats sold in August declined to $280.1 million, a decline of $22 million, due primarily to a 50 percent drop in superyacht sales. Only 11 superyachts were sold in August 2016, as opposed to 22 during the same month the previous year.
Total value increased in four of the other five segments, lead by boats 56 to 79 feet, which had a total value $12.6 million higher than the previous year, representing a 23 percent increase to $47.3 million on sales of 75 boats.
All sales for boats under 45 increased incrementally or were even. Boats in the 46- to 55-foot segment sold for a total price of $45.9 million, a decrease of 4 percent despite a 1 percent gain in the number of boats sold.
Boats under 26 feet, which had seen consistently lower sales for most of 2016, rebounded slightly with even sales of 891 boats. Total price was also even at $41.3 million.
Through the end of August, total value of boats sold was $2.65 billion, an increase of 4 percent over 2015 on a total of 21,898 units, a drop of 1 percent.
