Christensen Develops Two Smaller Mega Yachts: Although some buyers continue to want bigger mega yachts, not all are going in that direction. Jim Gilbert, president of Christensen Shipyards, noted that over the past year, clients have asked for smaller mega yacht designs. These requests have results in two new designs, the Christensen 40-meter Raised Pilot House and the 24-meter Tri-deck. One is classically Christensen in design while the other is more modern.

In recent years, Christensen has built and delivered several megayachts in the 164/50M series, including D’Nataline IV, Silver Lining and Chasseur. Each benefits by remaining beneath the 500GT mark. However, if you don’t plan to cruise with 20 total people between guests and crew, there’s no benefit to buying this big.

Both the 42-meter Tri-Deck and the 40-meter Raised Pilot House accommodate 10 guests and six crew members. The Raised Pilot house is contemporary when compared to the other megayachts from the Washington State shipyard, yet she still follows its practice of incorporating a bulbous bow and an emphasis on leisurely cruising. Twin MTUs should provide a top speed of 18 knots and a range exceeding 2,500 nautical miles at 10 knots. A full loaded draft of just over 2.1 meters allows anchorage in shallow waters.

The Christensen 40-meter Raised Pilot House also provides plenty of space for entertainment and relaxation without feeling too large. Features include a beach club, a main deck master suite and a fold-down balcony off the saloon and dining area. In addition, you’ll get perks like a guest pantry in the foyer below decks, a bar and hot tub on the sundeck and an observation area toward the bow. There’s also a main deck galley, while water toys are store aft on the sundeck.

The Christensen 42-meter Tri-Deck is also an entirely in-house design and has the familiar bow flare and overall profile you would expect from the builder. Like her smaller sister, her focus is range and good cruising speeds. She should see more than 4,000 nautical miles at 10 knots with twin MTU engines providing a top speed of 16 knots. Both her beam and draft are bigger, at 9 meters and 2.4 meters, respectively.

Other features include a main deck master suite with two walk-in closets, a skylounge with a bar and a sports deck, which is what Christensen is calling the swim platform. The platform is the ideal toy-staging area s you can outfit the lazarette with dive gear or as a beach club. The main deck galley also has walk-in refrigerated stowage. Both models are open to personalization.
