Columbus Yachts Sells 80m Megayacht Project
Construction on the 80m project began two months ago at the group’s facility in Naples and is set for completion before the end of 2018. Gianpaolo Lapenna, Palumbo Group project manager, noted that because the Naples facility has significant expertise in building large commercial ships, the client has expressed faith in the shipyard’s abilities.
It’s an important project for the yard as Columbus Yachts was established to construct superyachts like the 80m Classic. The yard started with a 54m vessel in 2011 and followed with a 57m superyacht in 2015. The 80m project is considered a huge stepping stone as Columbus intends to be competitive in the 70m to 100m market and beyond.
Project details remain confidential, but Lapenna describes the profile as “contemporary classic that will last through the years.” Italian companies are handling interior and exterior design for the yacht that will measure about 2,250GT, approximately 222GT above the average 77.5-82.5m motoryacht currently on the oceans. Glass will play a big role in the overall design. The sun deck will be another distinguishing feature.
