D-Fence System Tackles the Superyacht Drone Threat: British company Martek Marine aims to do something about the proliferation of drones that are increasingly posing a threat to the safety, security and privacy of superyachts. The company has launched an anti-drone defense product called D-Fence that can detect and track drone activity with a 20km radius of the vessel.
When a drone is detected, the system triggers creation of a 500-meter exclusion zone around the yacht on which it is installed. If a drone enters this zone, its video and control signals will be blocked and its fail-safe mode will initiate, resulting in a return flight or forced landing.
Martek has already launched D-Fence successfully in the commercial sector ad believes it has great potential in the superyacht market. Martek CEO Paul Luen believes that drone technology may be used for nefarious purposes that could include targeting of superyachts by terrorists. The development of this product is a major breakthrough to help mitigate such threats and protect luxury yachts.
According to Gartner Inc., 7 million personal and commercial drones were shipped worldwide in 2017, with the global total expected to reach 12 million by 2020.
