According to Fabrizio Ferri, CEO of Fincantieri China, the new agreement is part of the shipbuilder’s long-term plan to become a key player within the Chinese market. He noted that the company’s strategy has always been to become a preferred partner with the Chinese government starting with cruise ships. The idea is to strengthen the brand and name in China, which will eventually help the shipbuilder’s other segments.
The new ships will be tailored for the specific tastes of Chinese travelers, including interconnected cabins, along with large shopping and gaming areas on board. Delivery of the first ship is slated for 2023.
Asia has seen a steady increase in superyacht infrastructure available for vessels and a rising affinity for yachting, making it a potential superyacht market. Ferri believes the industry needs to deliver a clear, powerful message to attract new owners and charter clients. Customers in the Chinese market need to be education on the yachting culture, which can come from a dedicated marketing campaign.
