Heesen CEO Arthur Brouwer expects the yard core segment of 40m-60m yachts will continue to grow, but also believes its concentration on larger yachts will also grow. The Dutch yard has made a strategic move into spec build in the 50m-60m bracket and sees that size as a core market with the best potential, along with fully custom vessels in the 60-meter to 80-meter range.
Additionally, Brouwer also revealed plans to explore different designs and technologies that push the 500GT regulatory threshold. While sub-500GT builds are still an important market for Heesen, the company has built sheds and docks where it can operate between 50 meters and 60 meters where it can optimize the length and volume of superyachts built and to create maximum opportunities.
In late 2018, Heesen announced it would be its first explorer vessel, which Mark Cavendish, director of sales and marketing, see as a way to engage with the next generation of superyacht owners. The children of today’s ultra high net worth individuals are interested in the concept of longer voyages and carrying a number of toys on board so they explore or go heli-skiing in the Arctic or Antarctic. Those are adventures that the average yacht is set up to accommodate, thus Heesen intends to directly address that market.
