Initial Silent 80 Yacht Sold, Due for 2020 Delivery: Silent Yachts, the creator of the first silent catamarans, has sold the first Silent 80 yacht, which uses silent electric propulsion. Currently under construction in Ancona, Italy, her delivery is planned for early 2020, Three more units have also been sold and due for delivery later that year.
Neil Murray of South Africa, who purchased the first Silent 80, indicated this yacht is the perfect combination of form and function. He hopes to promote solar yachting, which can be both practical and elegant in style.
The Silent 80 utilizes 70 solar panels, plus electric motors and lithium batteries used by Tesla, made to work together by interior and exterior designer Marco Casali of Too Design, and Amedeo Migali of MICAD for the naval architecture. The silent electric propulsion gives the Silent 80 unlimited range with no fumes or noise and keeps vibration to a minimum.
Casali was able to balance the square footage needed for the solar panels with an overall look of refinement and sophistication in the Italian design. The first unit sold has a four-cabin layout with two owner cabins. The aft master suite boasts a huge room, study, walk around closet and sauna.
There are ample outdoor spaces as well, including a forward sofa and sunpads with room for up to eight guests. Indoors, the layout benefits from the lack of an engine room and can be fully customized, with options that include a large saloon, galley, dining area, lounge and up to six guest cabins. There also is enough space for a 4.5-meter tender, an amphibious car, and a gyrocopter on floats
The Silent 80 is built using vacuum-bagged resin and can reach a top speed of up to 18 knots. At 7 knots, the yacht can travel in complete silence and at a range of 100 nm per day.
