Long-Term Future of Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in Doubt: The long-term future of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) is in question know that TRR Bahia Mar LLC (TBML) has withdrawn its proposal to redevelop the Bahia Mar Hotel and Marina, which had been deemed crucial for the show to remain at its current location.

In explaining his company’s position in a letter to Fort Lauderdale officials, Jimmy Tate, TBML partner indicated that his company had not been accorded a sufficient level of respect and fairness in negotiations over the past two years.

Reasons for withdrawing the application include vocal opposition from community members that Tate indicated showed “ugliness” and “hatred,” and failure to agree to terms with the Marine Industry Association of South Florida (MIASF), owners of FLIBS and Show Management, which runs the event. Tate indicated that the proposed lease terms and conditions demanded by Show Management and MIASF were nowhere near to being fair and equitable.

The current FLIBS lease will only allow it to continue in its present location at Bahia Mar until 2020. The breakdown of the relationship between the negotiating parties handled to speculation that a lease extension may prove troublesome. With five years left on the leasing agreement, however, plenty of time exists to reach an agreement.
