Megayacht Builder Amels Reaches IMO Tier III Compliance
Amels started work on the 188 design before Tier III compliance was an issue. Compliance was moved back for yachts under 500 gt, but as the Amels 188 is 970 gt, it needed to comply. Because equipment originally offered would have taken up too much space on board, Amels visited several suppliers and requested a custom solution that would fit the original blueprint and would combine the engine, a selective catalytic reduction system, silencer and soot filter.
The task proved to be challenging, but once Amels received proposals, the shipbuilder worked closely with Lloyd’s Register to determine how to test the system. Amels even reserved an additional 50 cubic meters of space in the aft portion of the 188 to provide the additional space needed for the nitrous oxide reduction equipment. A solution developed by MTU and Hug Engineering, however, did not require the additional space, so this portion of the yacht became a storage area for dive equipment.
Amels’ holistic solution was tested under independent Lloyds Register class supervision at MTU Benelux, confirming reduction of nitrous oxide emission by approximately 80%
