New Sunseeker Mega Yacht Model to Feature Hybrid Propulsion: The Sunseeker 161, a new mega yacht series by the British manufacturer to debut in 2021 will feature a MTU hybrid propulsion package as standard on all builds in the series. Reportedly, the manufacturer has claimed that she will be the first semi-custom megayacht model from any builder to automatically incorporate such a propulsion system.
Sunseeker revealed details of the new 49-meter tri-deck mega yacht model at the recent BOOT Düsseldorf, which will follow the shipyard’s economic exterior lines, offer exceptional space and volume and an interior that can be styled to each owner’s taste.
The general theme is one of space and flexibility along with providing compelling features to enhance onboard enjoyment. Many features, including a plunge pool on the main deck and a beach club with drop down bulwarks and transom, are usually only associated with much larger craft. Standard guest configuration is for 10 guests over five cabins, with the ability to accommodate up to 12, depending on the layout chosen.
A pair of MTU 12V 2000 diesel engines, each producing 1,947 hp, is one part of the system, which will also incorporate gensets, electric propulsion modules, batteries and monitoring systems. Sunseeker indicates the package can expand on a modular basis, according to client wishes.
The Sunseeker 161 mega yacht will have six operating modes. Two of them, “smart hybrid” and “charge hybrid,” permit all the different power sources to automatically come into play as needed. In addition, the system offers a silent mode where batteries will provide all the necessary power, whether underway or at anchor. Silent mode can run for 40 minutes while the yacht is moving and for two hours while at anchor.
The electric mode allows the gensets to power both engines as well as the yacht’s hotel load that includes lighting, climate control and the like. This mode offers some fuel savings along with lower sound and vibration levels, making it ideal for overnight passages or long trips between destinations.
Sunseeker Sales Director Sean Robertson says customer demand is why the hybrid-power model has been developed. The manner in which owners use their boats continues to evolve as efficiency and noise reduction are now as important as volume, which ultimately contribute to a purchase decision.
