Known as Cosmos, the mega yacht project has the aesthetical values and design capabilities of the Dutch shipyard, such as the bow that features Oceanco’s trademark sharp concave profile. The hull, developed in collaboration with BMT Nigel Gee, is well proportioned to give the yacht a classical element.
One striking difference from earlier Oceanco vessels is Cosmos’ upper deck, which has a glass-domed atrium effect that is stretched to its limits. The result is a spectacular and completely new approach to an upper deck arrangement, particularly from an interior perspective.
According to Oceanco, the idea is to have a yacht where one can be in touch with and enjoy the surroundings, yet still be in a controlled environment. This idea led to the creation of the covered dome upper deck, which provides and interesting tension between adventure and safety.
The glass dome is complex and would likely present numerous challenges, including the double curvature of glass and the sheer size of the panes used, as well as the movement of the glass and the entire structure.
While there are potential construction challenges, Oceanco’s technical department says the project is feasible with current technology thanks to new glass types and structural design.
Although Cosmos may not fit everyone’s taste, it is truly a truly innovative design. Spectacular, uninterrupted views from the top deck are something virtually anyone can appreciate and Oceanco and de Basto have pushed the envelope by creating a challenging design that caters to this aspect.
