Palumbo Readies 80m Superyacht Dragon for Launch: Palumbo superyachts has rolled out the Columbus Classic motor yacht Dragon from its construction shed at the Italian yard’s Ancona facility in preparation for launch. Measuring 79.9 meters, the superyacht is due for delivery later this year. Hydro Tec is responsible for her exterior design, naval architecture and general arrangement, while Francesco Guida Design penned her interiors of the 2,100 GT vessel.
Sold in November 2016, the five-deck Dragon is the largest superyacht ever produced by Palumbo. She features a steel hull and aluminum superstructures with a flush foredeck and full-beam upper decks. Palumbo describes the yacht has having an “almost Renaissance inspiration,” while also evoking ocean liners of the 1950s and 60s.
Begun on speculation in 2012, the project was originally several meters shorter. Her technical platform will serve as the basis for Palumbo’s future 75-meter-plus projects.
Guest accommodation on the main deck comprises four double cabins with beds facing the exterior and a full-beam VIP suite with a private lounge that can also serve as an extra cabin with ensuite. Up to 12 guests may be accommodated along with a crew of 19.
The superyacht’s upper deck is reserved for the owner and includes a forward suite with wrap-around glazing, direct access to a private lounge on the foredeck and a helipad. The apartment includes large office, a separate dressing room and a sauna.
Dragon’s sundeck has a six-meter countercurrent pool with an integrated hot tub and a waterfall feature cascading from the overhanging room structure. The beach club has fold-down side platforms and has a sauna and hamman. A side-loading garage for two tenders, including a 9.5-meter custom limo tender by ISA yachts that mirrors the styling of the mothership, is on the starboard side amidships.
Water-level access on the starboard side on the lower deck allows guests to alight from the tender and take a glass-sided elevator to access all five decks.
Although no interior renderings or images have yet been released, Francesco Guida’s has designed a sophisticated and calming décor based on contrasting light and dark oak veneers with American walnut parquet flooring and satin-gold finished door handles and lighting fixtures. Natural and moonlight Travertine is featured throughout, while the beach club has backlit surfaces of semi-precious agate.
The superyacht’s Power comes from two 3,044hp MTU 16V4000 M63L engines with a top speed of 16.5 knots. At a cruising speed of 12 knots, Dragon will boat a maximum range of 6,000 nautical miles on a total fuel capacity of 215,000 liters. A fin stabilization system will ensure smooth cruising.
