St. Kitts and Nevis Launch Yachting Sector Implementation Plan: The government of St. Kitts and Nevis has announced a Yachting Sector Implementation Plan for the years through 2022, which will put into practice the key areas earmarked for development in a previous document. The idea behind the plan is to use the yachting industry to diversity and strengthen the economy of the islands by building on established land-based and cruise tourism. Areas for improvement include the effectiveness of the island’s entry procedures, provide work to the local community and bolster competitiveness of products, services and infrastructure.
Until recently plans to develop the yachting market by the St. Kitts and Nevis government have been primarily theoretical. The development of the National Yachting Policy in 2014 was the first move to garner government support for the development of a domestic yachting policy. Although recent private investments have occurred, most notably Christophe Harbour, little has materialized beyond that.
The St. Kitts and Nevis government in conjunction of major stakeholders in the region, have created 10 working groups that focus on areas such as safety, security, data, finance and budget to form actionable plant that move effectively move the yachting market forward. For the first time, the government has allocated a budget for the project. Even though that budget only contains a fraction of the necessary funds required to kick start rapid development, it represents a milestone for the regional and remains a clear signal of the government’s commitment to the project.
