Superyacht Galactica Star for Sale in Judicial Bid Arrangement: 65-meter superyacht Galactica Star, embroiled in a legal dispute between the U.S. and Nigerian governments, has been placed for sale in a 45-day judicial sealed bid arrangement that will end on May 19. The Heesen-built superyacht has been detained in the United States since last June, following allegations that her owner purchased her using misdirected profits from the sale of oil in Nigeria.
Her owner, Kolawole Aluko, a Nigerian energy magnate, is one of four defendants linked to former Nigerian petroleum minister Diezani Alison-Madueke accused of owing the Nigerian government nearly $1.8 billion in unpaid fees from oil deals. The U.S. government filed a civil forfeiture action in July 2017 seeking the forfeiture of several of Aluko’s assets, including Galactica Star. The following December, The Federal Republic of Nigeria filed a claim on the superyacht,, asserting that she was purchased with the proceeds of embezzlement of Nigerian treasury funds.
A court document filed in a United States District Court in early March outlines the request made by the U.S. government, along with the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to authorize the interlocutory sale of the vessel. The U.S. government took physical custody of Galatica Star in June 2018 and has since maintained it at the government’s expensive, spending approximately $170,000 per month to maintain her. The minimum reserve price for the sale is $42 million.
Superyacht Galactica Star has a 4,200 nautical mile range t 14 knots and a fast cruise speed of 28 knots. The custom interior, designed by Bannenberg and Rowell, accommodates 12 guests over six staterooms.
