A little bit out of our realm, but certainly interesting. The world’s largest cruise ship visited the United Kingdom recently when Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas docked at Southampton for a short stay. The 1,182-foot cruise ship is twice as large as any previous cruise ship to dock in the U.K. Hundred of locals went to the port to catch a glimpse.
Encompassing 16 decks, Oasis of the Seas has an air draft of 236 feet, twice the height of the Boat Show Eye Ferris Wheel at September’s PSP Southampton Boat Show. Launched in 2009, Oasis of the Seas is a monumental vessel with monumental statistics. More than 6,000 passengers may be accommodate3d on board along with 2,200 staff. The ship has 500,000 different components and is capable of a speed of 22 knots. Passengers have a choice of 25 on-board restaurants. Entertainment includes a mini-golf course, basketball court, two wave simulators, high-speed Internet and a movie theater.
A sister vessel, Allure of the Seas, with the same dimensions and features, is slated to be launched by Royal Caribbean in May 2015.
